Chanel Muharrem mbacp

I am a Registered member of The British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) whose register has been accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

I use a Person-Centred approach to put you at the centre of the counselling process, allowing you to set your own agenda and work at your own pace. I will listen to you without judgment, with empathy, kindness, and care. Allowing you the opportunity to talk openly in a safe and confidential space so you can work through and explore the issues you are experiencing.

I am experienced in helping clients with anxiety, stress, low mood, low confidence / self-esteem, relationship issues, work related issues, academic pressures, bereavement, loss & grief, carer support, personal development (including trainee counsellors), life transitions such as retirement, divorce / separation, moving to university, aging, and menopause. I have helped many clients to gain clarity, improve their wellbeing, and to find a pathway forward.

Before becoming a therapist, I worked in the City with professionals under high pressure, and later in academia, supporting students, academics, and my own members of staff. These experiences taught me how to understand what people need when they’re feeling overwhelmed, and how to help them find their way forward. It also means I’m familiar with the demands of corporate and academic work.

My counselling experience includes working with a leading mental health charity Mind, both as a bereavement counsellor and with people struggling with anxiety and depression. I have also worked with Southend Carers, and the Open Access Counselling Services. I’m currently working with Mind’s Dove Private Service, BetterHelp, and my own private practice to continue to help clients through life’s challenges.

Thanks to my experience working with a variety of people as a counsellor, I understand that you may be seeking counselling at a point in your life where you feel anxious, low, overwhelmed, and don’t know where to turn, or simply in need of a space to work through your thoughts or feelings.

It may be that you don’t know if counselling will help. I can only say, both from personal experience and the people I have had the pleasure to support, that change is possible. With the right support you can find hope and a new way forward.

Benefits of personal therapy for trainee counsellors

Personal therapy is a fundamental and compulsory component of any trainee counsellor course. I remember when I was a trainee, I found counselling training demanding both mentally and emotionally. I found the experience of personal therapy to be essential whilst training to be a counsellor. As well as experiencing the counselling relationship from the position of being a client, it also gave me the opportunity to work through my own issues, increased my personal development, increased my levels of self-awareness, and acceptance of self. In my opinion this contributed to me becoming a better counsellor.

Personal therapy during training can offer you a supportive space during your course to:

  • Explore any unresolved issues
  • Challenge concepts of self
  • Increase your self-awareness
  • Identify any blind spots you may have
  • Increase your personal development & growth
  • Explore how theory relates to you
  • Help you to recognise and separate your own personal issues from those of your clients when they arise in the therapeutic relationship
  • Gain new perspectives

I know it can be financially challenging when you are training to be a counsellor, the cost of the course, supervision, memberships, and CPD is expensive. I offer a concessionary rate of £40 to trainee and student counsellors. If you are interested, please get in touch.
